Robbie: Cup win was for Zal

1st November 2020

Robbie Neilson has dedicated Hearts’ Scottish Cup semi-final win over Hibs to Marius Zaliukas.

Another glorious derby victory at Hampden Park was overshadowed by the tragic news that the Jambos’ former captain had very sadly passed away earlier in the day.

Marius famously lifted the Scottish Cup at the national stadium in 2012, skippering the men in maroon to a triumphant 5-1 victory against Hibs, and Robbie, his former Tynecastle teammates, was quick to pay tribute to the legendary figure.

“I knew Marius, personally, for a number of years and its devastating for everybody at the club.,” he said. “It’s devastating because he was a big part of the club but a huge part of the history. He was captain of the 5-1 game against Hibs at Hampden.

“Hopefully we can give a slight bit of comfort to his family to say that this game is for him as well, because he’s had a difficult period recently with his Motor Neurone Disease and we’re all thinking about his family at this moment.”
