Joel joins Jambos

13th August 2019

Hearts have completed the loan signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira, subject to international clearance.

The 23-year-old has joined the Jambos on a season-long loan deal.

Swiss-born, the 6ft 2” keeper has been capped 16 times for Portugal U21s and was selected for Portugal’s 2016 Olympic Games squad alongside the likes of Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

He began his youth career at Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax before joining Manchester United in 2012.

Short loan spells at Rochdale and Portuguese outfit Belenenses followed before Joel made his United first-team debut in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford in January 2017.

Before the 2017/18 season was out he made his Premier League bow, keeping another clean sheet as Manchester United triumphed 2-0 at home over Crystal Palace, in a match that saw former Hearts loanee Demi Mitchell also make his debut.

Joel bagged another first-team appearance in September 2017, replacing Sergio Romero in a 4-1 League Cup win against Burton Albion at Old Trafford.

He spent the first half of last season on loan at Vitoria Setubal in the Portugeuse top flight before joining Belgian side Kortrijk for the second half of the campaign.

Joel will now compete for the No. 1 jersey at Tynecastle and could be available for selection ahead of the Jambos’ Betfred Cup 2nd Round tie against Motherwell on Friday night.
