Young duo to join Scotland training camp

20 May 2026

Liam McFarlane and James Wilson will train with Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad at Lesser Hampden next week, ahead of this summer’s Fifa World Cup, with McFarlane then heading to the USA with the squad as a training goalkeeper.

The Hearts duo have been involved with training on previous occasions, with Wilson making his senior debut against Greece at Hampden in March. This opportunity will provide the pair with further experience and the Scotland boss a further chance to cast his eye over both players.

The pair enjoyed successful seasons in their own right last campaign, with Wilson trying his luck south of the border with Tottenham Hotspur U21s, scoring four goals in 11 matches during his loan spell.

As for McFarlane, the 21-year-old enjoyed a terrific campaign on loan at Alloa Athletic. It ended in play-off heartache against Stenhousemuir last weekend, but Liam enjoyed regular football at the Indodrill, featuring 39 times for the Wasps.

An Academy Graduate, McFarlane signed a new contract at Hearts last summer, extending his stay at Tynecastle until the summer of 2028 and the stopper will undoubtedly gain invaluable experience this summer, before returning to the Jambos for the new season.
