Wouter Vrancken appointed new Head Coach

25 June 2026

Heart of Midlothian is delighted to confirm the appointment of Wouter Vrancken as our new Head Coach.

The highly regarded Belgian takes the Tynecastle reins after signing a two-year deal with the Jambos.

47-year-old Wouter, a two-time Belgian manager of the year, arrives in Gorgie fresh of the back of transforming Sint-Truiden from relegation candidates to Europa League participants in the space of a season.

A former player at the likes of Sint Truiden, Racing Genk and Gent, Wouter took his first steps into coaching with lower league Belgian sides DK Gravelo, Overpeltt VV before spending a season in the top-flight as assistant at Kortrijk.

He landed his first high profile role as manager of Mechelen in 2018, where he enjoyed instant success, leading the side back into the Pro League with a second-tier title triumph and winning the Belgian Cup, becoming only the second non top-flight club to win the competition in its entire history.

Three top eight finishes later, Wouter moved on to Genk. He guided them to UEFA Conference League qualification and was named manager of the year after coming within minutes of lifting the title, losing out to a late Antwerp winner to finish second.

Wouter again steered Genk to the Championship Playoffs the following season before departing and taking on the head coach role at Gent in June 2024.

He returned to Sint-Truiden, the club where he made his name as a player, for the 2025/26 campaign and completely turned their fortunes around. Battling the threat of relegation the year previous, Wouter’s attractive style of attacking football won both plaudits and points, taking The Canaries to a third-place finish – their highest in sixty years - and a spot in the Europa League play-offs, in what will be their first European appearance since 2003 and their first ever appearance in qualifiers associated with a major UEFA tournament.

Wouter decided it was time to seek a new challenge and left Sint-Truiden at the end of the season. Courted by many European sides, that new challenge has come in the form of Heart of Midlothian.

With Champions League qualifiers fast approaching and a blockbuster domestic campaign on the horizon, we are, once again, delighted to have Wouter at the helm and we warmly welcome him to Gorgie.
