Teamwork making James' dream work

18 July 2025

James Wilson believes the competition for strikers’ jerseys can only help develop his game even further.

The frontmen have made a flying start to the 2025/26 campaign. Both James and Lawrence Shankland notched twice across the opening two Premier Sports Cup games, with Elton Kabangu and Claudio Braga also bagging their first strikes of the season.

As James and his teammates target a third win on the bounce when they face Stirling Albion at Forthbank on Saturday, the Scotland cap spoke of his delight at Lawrence committing his future to Hearts and how that could benefit him in the long run.

Speaking to Hearts TV, James said; “I was buzzing (when Lawrence decided to stay) because I learn so much from him day to day. I ask him so many questions.

“Getting to play with him, he's one of the best players in Scotland. So, getting to play with him is one of the best things that I could have. So, yes, I was buzzing when he decided to stay.

“Claudio assisted me on Tuesday night. He's a good figure in the group, he's enthusiastic, he really enjoys being here. I think I'm looking forward to playing with him more.

“And he got the assist from me on Tuesday, so I was really happy for that. So, yes, I'm looking forward to playing with him.

“I think it's a good confidence booster for us. As a striker, you can play well, but if you don't score a goal, you're a bit disappointed.

“Whereas on the flip side, I didn't think I played very well on Tuesday, but I came away with a goal and I'm quite happy.

“So, I think that's just the life of a striker. You have to deal with that.”
