Stuart's set plays success

16 July 2025

Stuart Findlay believes the hard yards at the training ground are paying dividends on the pitch.

The debutant opened the scoring against Hamilton Academical last night after only six minutes, powering home a header after getting on the end of Blair Spittal’s corner.

The Jambos have taken advantage of a renewed focus on set plays which has seen two Premier Sports Cup wins from two, something the big centre-half is delighted with.

Speaking to Hearts TV, Stuart said; “We've put a good bit of work into set plays this week. I knew my job was to try to get around into that back area and when you've got Spits on the park he's going to deliver the ball for you, he's going to give you that service.

“I was just lucky enough it landed on my head, I was able to put it away, so I was absolutely delighted.

"It's good to see that the work pays off because when you're playing games like this you know it's going to be tight at the start, you know they're going to be tough to break down, so to get a goal from a set piece to get us on our way it's always a good thing for us.

“We knew that Hamilton would pose a different sort of threat than what Dunfermline did and we had to make sure we navigated that. I thought the first half they tried to break a few times, they looked okay on the break, but I think on the whole we kept quite good control of the game and another four goals to add to the four at the weekend.

“It's a really good start to the cup campaign for us.”
