Smutek on comeback win over QOS

24 September 2025

Kai Smutek says he enjoyed every minute of the Wee Jambos’ comeback victory over Queen of the South on Tuesday night and admits the players always believed they could win the game.

In a tight first half, the Doonhamers led 2-0 at the break, but three second half strikes from Tommy North, Bobby McLuckie and Gus Stevenson saw Angus Beith’s side take a deserved victory back to Edinburgh.

Speaking to the Official Hearts Website at full-time, the skipper said:

“I loved it. Every minute of it. It's great for the boys to get that lift. The feeling when you go into the changing room after a game like that is just so good. Especially after the difficult run we’ve been on.

“We've been playing well the past few games, but it's brilliant to just finally get a win. Despite the fact we were 2-0 down, there was a lot of chances in it, and we knew we could go out there and win the game. As soon as that first goal went in, we knew there would be more and more chances for us.”

The central defender has been enjoying the extra responsibility that comes with wearing the armband and believes it’s another aspect that is seeing him continue his development in the Lowland League.

“I'm enjoying taking on that extra responsibility and leading the boys out. It's different for me, but I'm enjoying it.

“I feel confident going into games now. It’s something that the Lowland League has helped me with too. It did take me a while to get used to it. It's obviously a very physical league, but I feel I've improved a lot in aerial duels as well.

“But for us as a team, now we've got the three points in the cup, we can take that into the league and try and get a few more wins and keep that level of performance high.”

The Wee Jambos travel to Airdie on Saturday to take on Celtic B.
