Match Report: Wee Jambos hammer Hibs in Youth Cup
13 January 2026David McNeil's U18s side booked progression to the semi-finals of the Scottish Youth Cup after hammering Hibs 3-0 at Oriam.
The Wee Jambos weathered a competitive start to the cup tie before forward Connor Dow opened the scoring with a low finish after 19 minutes.
From there, the young Maroons took control, and blew Hibs away with their intensity and aggression from front to back before Keir McMeekin scored a spectacular ranged effort on 36 minutes.
McMeekin would set up the third and final strike of the night in the second 45, laying the ball into the path of substitute Charlie Sanders - whose powerful snapshot into the net underlined Hearts' dominance across the 90.
McNeil's side earned a by to the third round of this season's Youth Cup after reaching the fourth round last season, where they exited at the hands of St. Mirren in a 3-0 defeat to the Paisley side.
The Wee Jambos swept aside Ross County and Bonnyrigg Rose in rounds three and four in high scoring victories, setting up a mouthwatering derby tie with Darren McGregor's Hibs in the quarter-finals.
Hibs subjected Hearts to a proper scrap in the opening 15 minutes, with Luke McGregor's corner forcing Jack Lyon into early action after the visitors caught the Wee Jambos on the back foot early doors.
Tommy North, a nightmare for the Hibs defence all evening, slipped Connor Dow into the area after 19 minutes for Hearts' first, with Dow applying a cute finish through the legs of the 'keeper to send Hearts on their way.
Hibs almost had an equaliser five minutes later after Josh McDonald's corner curved towards goal, but Lyon produced a classy fingertips save to tip it over the bar and maintain the lead.
Cole Shankland would fizz an effort over the bar shortly after for Hibs, but Hearts' chances were tumbling from the sky by then, and Liam Walker's spectacular dig from distance cracked the woodwork as McNeil's men pressed for a second.
That arrived in due course, with Keir McMeekin striding forward and drilling a sublime low strike into the bottom corner from distance as he effortlessly evaded the attentions of his markers.
The Wee Jambos almost added a third in first-half stoppage, with skipper Alfie Osborne seeing his header flash over the crossbar following a well-taken Hearts corner.
Hearts started the second half brightly with Sam Vautherin saving a vicious strike from Tommy North before Euan Glasgow hooked one over the crossbar from close range.
Hibs kept at it, but Hearts' third after 74 minutes ended the game as a contest, with substitute Sanders smashing McMeekin's lay-off into the back of the net to get Hearts across the finish line home and hosed.
Elsewhere: Kilmarnock thrashed St. Mirren 3-1 in Paisley in the night's other quarter-final tie, with remaining matches between Queen's Park and Musselburgh, and Aberdeen and Dundee, to be played later this week to determine our semi-final opponents.
