Match Report: Rangers 0-2 Heart of Midlothian

13 September 2025

Hearts claimed their first win at Ibrox in 11 years this afternoon, with a titanic showing from the boys in maroon securing a 2-0 win over Rangers.

For the first time since Osman Sow's late winner, Derek McInnes and his team sunk Rangers on their own patch, with Lawrence Shankland scoring in both halves to earn a dramatic, and deserved, victory over the Glasgow side.

Our first match back from the international break saw the pack shuffled, with German goalkeeper Alex Schwolow handed his debut between the posts and Alexandros Kyziridis earning a starting berth after his West Lothian winner last time out.

On the bench, the fit again Jamie McCart had a spot after recovering from the ankle injury that's sidelined him since pre-season - and veteran Stephen Kingsley making his first league start of the season.

Hearts went close after two minutes. Kyziridis whipped a fine cross into the mix that was kept alive by Cammy Devlin's lob, with Craig Halkett leaping to meet it with his head, but nodded just over Jack Butland's crossbar.

Two minutes later, the Jambos were at it again, with Lawrence Shankland evading the attention of John Souttar before sending a low swipe at goal that was held by Butland as Hearts enjoyed an early spell with the ball.

After 22 minutes, the boys in maroon claimed a deserved lead. A ball forward saw Claudio Braga lead the charge towards the box. Taking his time, Braga slid Shankland in - who ghosted through the Rangers defence and slipped an angled shot into the bottom corner beyond the reach of Butland.

The home fans started to turn, and Rangers eventually grew back into the game; Thelo Aasgaard testing Schwolow for the first time in the game with a spectacular curling effort from distance - it seemed destined to loop down into the net, but the German somehow got a hand to it and tipped it onto the post and out.

Rangers threatened once more in first half stoppage, as Djeidi Gassama sent another ranged strike at Schwolow, but the 'keeper sprung into action with another fine save to tip it onto the post.

Russell Martin's side went on the attack right from the off, with Rangers screaming for a penalty after 58 minutes when Thelo Aasgaard's attempt on goal from a corner appeared to make contact with Oisin McEntee - but referee Steven McLean waved away appeals.

Rangers turned up the heat, but just couldn't get the ball in the net, with Gassama's curling strike only clipping the post, and Derek Cornelius seeing his bullet header shoot over the crossbar from James Tavernier's corner.

The hosts thought they had claimed the lead after 68 minutes when Tavernier's corner was bundled over the line by substitute Youssef Chermiti - but a subsequent VAR check confirmed offside against Rangers.

With ten minutes to go, Hearts added another twist to the tale when Harry Milne won a penalty; the full-back tripped by Mohamed Diomande as he cut into the Rangers box with McLean pointing to the spot.

Lawrence Shankland stepped forward, and the inevitable number nine hit low, with an initial save from Butland, but Shankland showed predatory instinct to tuck away the rebound - sending the maroon corner of Ibrox into raptures.
