Match Report: Motherwell 0-0 Hearts

29 November 2025

Hearts and Motherwell shared the points in a competitive 0-0 draw at Fir Park on Saturday afternoon.

After a dour first-half, both sides created chances in the second 45, but neither able to break the deadlock across the piece.

The star of the show for Hearts was perhaps goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow; who made three world class saves to keep Hearts alive in the second half.

Derek McInnes made several changes to the side that was defeated at Pittodrie last week; Blair Spittal coming in from the start against his former club, with Lawrence Shankland also returning to the fray following an ankle injury.

Hearts carved out their first opportunity just five minutes in after some dogged pressing from Craig Halkett slipped the ball into Claudio Braga. Scarpering away down the left, his floated delivery into the area found Harry Milne - the resulting header going just over the crossbar.

Motherwell had a glorious chance of their own minutes later, but Tawanda Maswanhise mistimed horrendously at the front post to miss out on steering  home a perfect cross from Elijah Just towards the front post.

The hosts had the ball in the net after 23 minutes via Callum Hendry; the Motherwell forward sliding in to force the ball over the line after a quick cross from Callum Slattery cut Hearts open.

A subsequent VAR check took place, and Hearts were spared their blushes after replays concluded that Hendry was offside.

In truth, it was a lacklustre half for both sides - with neither team really able to say they were able to get their foot on the ball and create something. A Hearts chance in the closing minutes of the first half summed it up.

Twice going close before cutting back and going again, Blair Spittal backheeled the ball into the path of Cammy Devlin - but the Australian's effort was high and wide as the Jambos went in at the break with a blank scoresheet.

There was certainly a bit more 'oomph' about the Jambos at the start of the second half; Alexandros Kyziridis screwing an effort just wide of the post after some tricky running to evade his man and slip into the Motherwell box.

Tawanda Maswanhise would return to trouble Hearts once again; pouncing on another Just and cross nodding towards goal, with Alexander Schwolow flying out to claim the ball.

63 minutes was the start of a chaotic few moments; Johnny Koutroumbis sprang into action to acrobatically hook a Shankland header destined for goal off the line, with Motherwell quickly hitting Hearts on the counter.

The charge forward culminated in a searching ball forward picking out Maswanhise with space in the box, who promptly chipped the ball over Schwolow to hand Motherwell the lead.

VAR would intervene once more however, and replays once again chopped off a Motherwell goal for offside.

The game dragged on and became fiercely competitive, with Alex Schwolow making a huge save after 77 minutes to maintain parity - flying out of his goal after a mazy run from Elijah Just to deny his powerful effort from close range.

Just minutes later, the German goalkeeper produced another brilliant stop, making a fantastic stretching save to deny Lukas Fadinger's curling effort from distance.

With ten minutes to go; Schwolow made it a hat-trick of world class saves - this time at full stretch to tip a powerful Callum Slattery free-kick over the bar as the boys in maroon beat back the hosts' assault once more.

With three minutes of added time, there was still no breakthrough, and Hearts returned to Edinburgh with a point for their efforts.
