Match Report: Hibernian 3-2 Heart of Midlothian

27 December 2025

Hearts were beaten 3-2 by Hibs at Easter Road in the second Edinburgh derby of the season this afternoon.

Jamie McGrath volleyed in Hibs' opener after just two minutes, before Josh Campbell's looping header piled on the pain for the boys in maroon.

Changes were made at the break, but Hibs grabbed their third shortly after the restart to compound a nightmarish day - Lawrence Shankland scoring a consolation header late on, before Cammy Devlin added another to set up a nervy ending.

It was a bad start to proceedings in Leith, with Hibs racing into the lead after just two minutes. Martin Boyle whipped an inviting ball into the box, picking out an unmarked Jamie McGrath in space - with the Irishman sending a simple volley beyond Schwolow to put the hosts in front.

Hibs were in control in those first ten minutes, and almost added their second after Kieran Bowie popped a snapshot at goal after dispossessing the dithering Jambos on the left side, Schwolow claiming it.

Hearts had a huge chance to get back on level terms after 18 minutes; a deep cross from Stephen Kingsley found the unmarked Lawrence Shankland at the back post, but his header flashed across goal and went inches past the post.

The Jambos would have to wait until the 27th minute for their next sniff; another cross from Kingsley wasn knocked down by Alexandros Kyziridis into the path of Tomas Magnusson, whose vicious swipe at goal was deflected behind.

From the resulting corner a Hearts move broke down and allowed Hibs to steal a march back up the park on the counter, with Boyle peeling away from his markers and poking a low strike wide of the post.

Right before the break, Hibs landed one more punch for their second of the afternoon. Jamie McGrath's cross picked out Josh Campbell in the middle, with his looping header beating Schwolow and sending the hosts into the break two goals to the good.

McInnes shuffled the pack after the break; with Beni Baningime and Harry Milne emerging from the bench as Hearts looked to mount a response.

But the Jambos' calamitous decision making would haunt them once again, with Hibs racing into a three-goal lead just two minutes from the restart as Stuart Findlay's clearance was ripped away by Kieran Bowie on the break before threading a low finish beyond Schwolow.

Hibs had the lion's share of possession after that, but Hearts fashioned the odd chance - Kyziridis seeing his dig from distance tipped behind by Sallinger in the Hibs goal before the hosts cleared the danger away from the resulting corner.

The Greek winger had another pop after 75 minutes, bending a dipping effort towards goal that was tipped over the bar once more by Sallinger.

Hearts would claw a goal back a minute later, with Shankland glancing a header into the bottom corner after a decent set-play routine with Kyziridis.

The Jambos had another throw of the dice with ten minutes to play; substitute Sabah Kerjota whipping a dangerous delivery into the box that missed Tomas Magnusson's head by a matter of inches.

There was more twists to this Edinburgh derby tale to come, and Hearts clawed another goal back with just two minutes of regular time left; Cammy Devlin leaping to meet Sallinger's save on the rebound from a Kyziridis effort - nodding the ball into the net and throwing the Jambos a major lifeline.

Hearts had two last digs, but Sallinger came to Hibs' rescue with two world class saves to maintain their lead and secure three points.
