Match Report: Glasgow City 2-0 Hearts

02 September 2023

Hearts were defeated 2-0 by Glasgow City at Petershill Park on Saturday night.

Eva Olid made four changes from the side that faced Aberdeen last weekend. Lizzie Waldie, Erin Rennie, Aimee Anderson and Cailin Michie all came into the side in place of Georgia Hunter, Katie Lockwood, Brodie Greenwood and Sade Adamolekun.

City have had a positive start to their season, so it was no surprise to see them come flying out the traps for this highly anticipated Saturday night clash.

In truth, the first half was all about Charlotte Parker-Smith. The Hearts stopper came up big on numerous occasions to deny the home side throughout the first half.

Lauren Davidson is undoubtedly one of the best players currently in the league and much of City’s early joy came down that right-hand side.

Parker-Smith produced three good stops in quick succession before the 20-minute mark, all denying Brenna Lovera, who was making smart moves in the middle to get on the end of Davidson’s crosses.

Up the other end, Hearts had a good chance of their own, ten minutes before the interval. Georgia Timms made good ground down the right and her low cross was fired over by Anderson.

It’s often the case against the top three. When the chances come along, you have to take them, and Hearts found themselves behind just seconds later.

A City move down the left took an unfortunate ricochet of Carly Girasoli and found it’s way past Parker-Smith.

It was no more than the home side deserved, but Hearts thought they had levelled the scores two minutes before the break when Girasoli slotted home from a Ciara Grant cross, only for the flag to be raised for offside.

Into the second half, Hearts were trying to be more direct and although they were limiting City to fewer openings, they were struggling to trouble the home side up the other end.

City added a second, 14 minutes from time as Hearts failed to clear their lines and Kinga Kozak volleyed home.

That was the way it stayed and Hearts now have to pick themselves up ahead of next weekend’s Edinburgh Derby at Tynecastle.
