Match Report: Celtic 3-1 Heart of Midlothian

16 May 2026

Heart of Midlothian fell just short at the final hurdle as Celtic claimed the Premiership title with victory on the final day in the east end of Glasgow.

Lawrence Shankland had Hearts on their way in the first half, before Arne Engels converted from the spot in first half stoppage.

The men in maroon put on a valiant display, but two late goals from Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand floored Hearts in the end.

Derek McInnes opted for three changes for the title showdown in Glasgow's east end; Frankie Kent, Claudio Braga and Blair Spittal all dropped to the bench, replaced by Stephen Kingsley, Pierre Landry Kabore and Jordi Altena.

The task at hand seemed so simple; avoid defeat, and Heart of Midlothian would be crowned Champions of Scotland, and end the 66-year wait for the league flag's return to Gorgie.

Celtic were never going to make it that easy, the hosts exploding out of the traps to test the boys in maroon - Auston Trusty sending an early header over the bar after just two minutes as Hearts looked to match the tempo.

A Nygren foul against Harry Milne opened the window for Hearts to swing a Kyziridis delivery in from the left touchline, his ball evading an incoming Stuart Findlay by a whisker as Sinisalo claimed from the resulting corner.

The Jambos started to see the ball soon after, Landry Kabore barrelling towards goal from a ball forward before Alistair Johnston body-slammed the ball away from danger. Harry Milne drove Hearts forward once again, his looping cross picking out an unmarked Shankland at the back post, his header floating wide.

This wasn't a full blooded encounter, but two fighters circling each other warily knowing one punch could undo eight months of work. Alex Schwolow faced his first test of the game as Celtic pounced forward on the counter, standing firm to claim Sebastian Tounetki's low dig from distance.

Hearts continued to probe themselves, Jordi Altena sending a curling effort high and wide from outside the box, with Alexandros Kyziridis making a vital interception to loosen the ball back to Schwolow after Arne Engels advanced on the break.

With five minutes to go until the break, it was Heart of Midlothian who drew first blood. Stephen Kingsley's deep corner found Lawrence Shankland unmarked at the back post - the skipper planting a simple header into the unguarded goal as the maroon corner of Parkhead went into raptures.

There was injury time drama at the half's conclusion; Kieran Tierney's cross was handled by Alexandros Kyziridis, clearing the way for Arne Engels to convert from the spot as Celtic pulled themselves back on level terms.

Changes for both sides followed after the break; Sebastian Tounetki making way for Kelechi Iheanacho for the hosts, whilst Frankie Kent and Blair Spittal were introduced to the game for Hearts - Jordi Altena, and Beni Baningime making way after pulling up with injury.

Landry Kabore won a promising free-kick right on the edge of the area, but Kyziridis saw his effort sail well wide of the goal as both sides geared themselves up for more. With so much on the line, the quality of the first half vanished as both sides starting slugging it out for control.

Celtic remained deadly at set-pieces, Alex Schwolow letting out a sigh of relief as the hosts' corner saw Daizen Maeda loop a header just over the crossbar as McInnes threw Claudio Braga, Islam Chesnokov, and Alan Forrest into proceedings.

Explosive pace brought the hosts forward once again as Maeda's overlapping run brought them to the box, Cammy Devlin fouling Osmand right on the edge to set up a dangerous free-kick; Engels hitting his effort wide with 15 minutes to go.

Celtic really started to ramp the pressure up on the JTs, with Celtic Park howling in disbelief as Iheanacho's powerful strike cracked the post before spilling back into danger.

A few phases later, and Alex Schwolow made a vital stop to deny Ben Nygren's header from close range, tipping it over the bar as Hearts looked to stem the tide and get back up the other end of the park.

The pressure finally took it's toll, and Celtic found the winner with just minutes to go, Daizen Maeda forced the ball over the line - an agonising VAR wait to check for offside passing before the goal was confirmed.

Late on, Callum Osmand hit Hearts on the break with every man forward, allowing him to roll into an empty net.
