International round-up

22 March 2024

It’s another busy period of international football for Hearts’ globetrotting stars.

There was a night to remember down under for Kye Rowles, who bagged his first international goal for Australia yesterday. He and Jambos teammate Nathaniel Atkinson played 90 minutes as the Socceroos beat Lebanon 2-0 in Sydney to continue their perfect start to World Cup qualifying. With three wins from three, they top Group I and face Lebanon away from home on Tuesday.

On-loan full-back Dexter Lembikisa added to his cap total last night with a 90-minute outing in Jamaica’s CONCACAF Nations League semi-final defeat to USA in Texas. It took the hosts until extra time to finally see off the Reggae Boyz, emerging 3-1 winners. They will now play Honduras in a third-place play-off on Sunday in Texas.

Aidan Denholm and Lewis Neilson, on loan at Partick Thistle, were unused subs as Scotland U21s continued their impressive Euro 2025 qualifying campaign with a 4-1 over Kazakhstan in Paisley last night. The young Scots sit second in Group B, level on points with first-placed Spain. The group winners will qualify directly to the finals in Slovakia, with runners-up entering a play-off round.

Macaulay Tait made a late substitute appearance for Scotland U19s in their midweek 3-1 defeat to Italy. They continue their Euros Elite Round qualifying on Saturday with an encounter against Georgia, before facing Czech Republic three days later.

There could be more caps won this evening when Scotland meet the Netherlands in a friendly match in Amsterdam. Craig Gordon, Zander Clark and Lawrence Shankland will all be hoping to pull on the national team jersey and impress manager Steve Clarke ahead of this summer’s Euros in Germany. Another opportunity to shine will present itself on Tuesday when Scotland host Northern Ireland in another friendly.

Toby Sibbick could make his international debut for Uganda tonight when they take on Comoros in a friendly match. The Cranes follow that up with a home friendly against Ghana on Tuesday.

Kenneth Vargas continues his rapid ascent through the international ranks with Costa Rica in action tomorrow night. They face Honduras in a Copa America qualifying play-off in Texas. The winner will meet either Canada or Trinidad & Tobago in the final.
