International round up

20 November 2023

Club football may have been on hiatus the past week but several Hearts stars have kept themselves busy pulling on the jerseys of their respective countries.

Read on to find out how they fared…

Zander Clark and Lawrence Shankland

It’s been a good week for the Jambo duo. Zander won his second and third caps, playing 90 minutes in each game as Scotland closed off their successful EURO 2024 qualifying campaign with a 2-2 draw in Georgia before drawing 3-3 with Norway at Hampden last night.

Lawrence was the hero in Tibilisi, marking his 86th minute substitute appearance by heading home a 93rd minute equaliser for his second national team goal. He followed that up with an 89th minute appearance at Hampden last night.

Kye Rowles

Kye was an unused substitute last Thursday as Australia got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a flyer when they beat Bangladesh 7-0 in Melbourne.

With another qualifier – Palestine in Kuwait – taking place tomorrow, the defender will be hoping to add to his 12 Socceroos caps.

Kenneth Vargas

It was a bittersweet moment for Kenneth last Thursday as he added a second senior cap to his name with a 75th minute sub appearance, but Costa Rica went down 3-0 at home to Panama in their CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final.

The return leg takes place in the early hours of tomorrow morning, UK time.

Calem Nieuwenhof

Midfielder Calem got more game time for Australia’s U23s, starting and lasting 63 minutes in their 2-1 friendly win away to Qatar last Friday.

The Olyroos face Saudi Arabia tomorrow in another friendly match.

Yutaro Oda

Yutaro started in Japan U22’s impressive 5-2 friendly win over Argentina on Saturday. The young Samurai Blues face Argentina again in another friendly tomorrow.

Alex Lowry, Aidan Denholm, Lewis Neilson

Scotland U21s bagged a tremendous 2-0 win in Belgium on Friday to move into second place in their 2025 U21 Euro Championships qualifying group.

Lewis started and played 90 minutes while Aidan was an early introduction, coming on after 15 minutes, with Alex Lowry remaining on the substitutes’ bench.
