Derek previews Ayrshire trip

12 March 2026

Derek McInnes praised the focus and mentality of his players ahead of Saturday night’s match against Kilmarnock, before discussing the impressive travelling support with another sold out away end confirmed at Rugby Park.

The Jambos head to Ayrshire on Saturday night looking to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the Premiership table, but the Head Coach is aware of the job at hand with Killie recently bringing in Neil McCann and Billy Dodds.

Speaking to the media at the pre-match press conference, McInnes said:

“The focus has been great. I think the last couple of performances have really pleased us, in the sense that we got the desired outcome, but the performances have been good as well. And we just need to try and now refocus on the next challenge and that's Kilmarnock away.

“And for me, although throughout the season we've looked at little blocks of games and all the rest of it, it's just taking each game as it comes. I think every game needs our full attention. Kilmarnock away is always difficult for any team, and now that Neil’s went in with Billy I think there's been an upturn in fortunes there.

“I've alluded to it recently - every game becomes more important for so many teams, and Kilmarnock are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the league. So, we're well aware of the challenges ahead of us on Saturday night, but equally, we've got to make sure that we're as good as we can be.

“There's 27 points to win, 27 points that you can lose. And there's still so much to play for. I think we're in a position that we're pleased with, but we know how quickly it can change.

“We’ve just got to stay on the job, stay focused and keep doing what we're doing. I'm not asking for the players to do anything that they've not done up until now. Their focus, their mentality, their concentration on the job at hand has been terrific.

“We could play at four in the morning and I think our fans would be there. That's the way it feels at the minute. We feel as if they just want to follow us.

“The backing we get home and away has been first-class this season. They've got a huge part to play. So when we run out at Rugby Park for the warm-up and the lads see that, it feels like a big game right away.

“It also feels like a big game for the opponent and it feels like a cup tie. A lot of our better moments have been - with so many at Tynecastle as well - a lot of the good memories already this season and the good moments have been away from home. Saturday's going to be another opportunity to have that.”
