Derek: A Fitting Tribute To Craig

24 July 2025

Derek McInnes had glowing words for Craig Gordon as the club prepares to toast one of its favourite sons in Saturday’s testimonial match against Sunderland at Tynecastle Park.

The Premier League side, who Craig represented between 2007 and 2012 following his record transfer from Gorgie, will join us in the celebrations, as well as providing the Jambos their final pre-season run out before the league kicks off.

McInnes reckons the game is a fitting tribute for our number one as part of his testimonial year, and says there’ll be plenty to look forward to on an exciting day for both Craig and his family.

“They've done remarkably well coming up from the Championship last year,” he told Hearts TV.

“They have a good level of player. There's a big crowd from the Sunderland end, and a good turnout from our supporters, and it's to honour big Craig who's served both clubs well, particularly our club.

“It's a fitting game for him and it's important for him and his family. From our point of view, it's a step up in quality from the games we've played, but it'll be a good test for us and a good indicator of where we're at.

“I think everybody's looking forward to the game for loads of different reasons but primarily for Craig to celebrate his testimonial. There's a lot going on in his testimonial year, but this is the main event and we’re looking forward to taking part in that.”

After completing their Group E campaign of the Premier Sports Cup with a 100%-win rate, the boss stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism as the big league kick off approaches against Aberdeen.

The Premier League Black Cats will provide a stern test, but Derek expects bravery and commitment from his players as they look to honour Craig Gordon in the correct manner.

“Clearly we're going to have to be under a wee bit more pressure at times,” he added.

“We're going to have to really be tight with our organisation against players who'll really hurt you and are playing in the Premier League for a reason.

“I still want us to impose ourselves in the game, still want us to be brave in what we're trying to do. It’s a testimonial game for Craig but it's a really good game for us and our last game in front of supporters before we play Aberdeen.

“It would be nice to go and get a positive result and get a lot of positives from it, add some minutes to some of the boys as well. If you can even win the game, that stands you in good stead going forward.”
