Sean Burt praises ‘dig deep’ attitude from Hearts Women

11 January 2022

Rebecca McAllister gave Hearts the lead with a wonderful strike in a first half the girls dominated, but they couldn’t find the second goal to kill off the visitors, who were always going to throw the kitchen sink at Hearts as the game wore on.

Motherwell hit the post late on, but Hearts held on for another deserved three points on home soil.

“Credit to the girls,” said assistant manager, Burt. “They showed two contrasting performances in the first and second half.

“The first half was a very dominant performance where we carved out numerous clear-cut opportunities. The second half, Motherwell stepped it up a gear, but the girls stood up to that. I think at times you need to get points over the line and ensure you dig deep, and the girls did that.

“When you miss opportunities like we did you give the opposition hope. You can see that in the second half, we missed numerous opportunities, and we should have been a lot more comfortable today.

“Credit to Motherwell, they threw everything at us, but we defended cross balls well, we defended our box well and ultimately that’s got us the three points.”

The girls now face three away games in a row and the challenge has to be to take the home form out on the road with them. Burt explained that the big pitch at Oriam suits the way he wants his side to play.

“We touched on it before the season, we want to make this place a real fortress. We want to use this big pitch to our advantage. We’ve got fast players. We want to be effective when we play here, and I think you can see that.

“We love this pitch. We train on it every week and it suits our strengths.

“We have real quality in the wide areas and up front and I think at any level, raw pace is a real nightmare to deal with and when you have quick players like we do, you want to use this big pitch.”
