A cool Carly Johns strike was enough for Hearts Women to claim all three points in a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Spartans in SWPL Week 5 on Sunday afternoon at Ainslie Park.
Manager Andy Thomson made three changes from the previous weekend’s emphatic win at Montrose, handing starts to Monica Forsyth, Mairead Fulton, and Keri Halliday. His side delivered another disciplined defensive display to secure their fourth clean sheet from their opening five SWPL fixtures.
The Jambos created the first opportunity of the afternoon inside three minutes when Keri Halliday forced a diving save from Hensel-Burg in the Spartans goal. Spartans threatened moments later in the 6th minute, with Izzy Young firing into the side netting. Plenty of possession and chances came Hearts’ way as they quickly reasserted control, with Lauren Wade seeing a whistling effort fly just over the crossbar from distance.
The breakthrough arrived just before the half-hour mark. In the 29th minute, Carly Johns found the bottom-right corner with a composed finish, leaving the Spartans goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Johns looked to double her tally five minutes before the break, but her long-range effort was comfortably claimed by Hensel-Burg.

Hearts continued to dominate the ball after the restart, dictating play with strong spells of possession in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Wade went close to extending the advantage in the 69th minute, skimming a shot from outside the box narrowly over the crossbar.
Hensel-Burg denied Johns a second with fifteen minutes remaining, reacting sharply to beat away a close-range strike. Mariana Speckmaier then led an 81st-minute break with a clever piece of skill, but her final strike sailed high and wide.
Johns was denied once more by Hensel-Burg in the 84th minute, before Rachael Johnstone kept her composure in the dying moments of the game to ensure the clean sheet remained intact and seal all three points in Pilton.
The Jambos now look ahead to an anticipated UEFA Europa Cup qualification fixture next Wednesday against Real Sociedad at 19:00.
