John Lough

05 March 2024

Heart of Midlothian was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player John Lough this week.

Signed from Preston Athletic in 1955, John was a talented player who served the club well in his six years of service at Tynecastle Park.

John had to wait to make his first team bow in a maroon jersey with the fine form of regular left-back George Thomson, along with a compulsory spell of national service, restricting his appearances.

John played eleven league matches at the tail end of the 1958-1959 season following Dave Mackay’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur and returned to play for the Reserve Team the following season. He played a few games on the club’s Canadian Tour and a few more appearances in the 1960-1961 season.

The club bid farewell to John in April 1961, as legendary Hearts boss Tommy Walker looked to refresh the side with the capture of Davie Holt and several other new faces.

John made 28 first team appearances for the club, 15 of which were competitive, and sadly passed away in Edinburgh at the age of 89.

Our sincere condolences go to John’s family and friends at this sad time. Forever in our Hearts.
