Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of former player, George Peden, who passed away on 22 September at 83 years of age.
George was born on 12 April 1943 at Victoria Street, Rosewell and started work as a guillotine operator in a paper mill on leaving school. However, George had an eye on professional football and the 5’10” left-back attracted the attention of senior clubs while with the all-conquering juvenile side, Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic “A.”.
George signed a provisional contract with Hibernian in July 1962 and was immediately loaned out to the junior team, Arniston Rangers. However, he was not retained by the Easter Road club and after a few trial matches, the uncompromising defender was recruited by Hearts on a full-time basis in April 1964.
George was a stalwart for Hearts Reserves in 1964-65, but made one senior appearance the following season. This came on 23 April 1966 when Hearts drew 1-1 against Stirling Albion in a Scottish League match. In 1966-67, George replaced Davie Holt in 12 Scottish League games and one memorable friendly when Hearts defeated Newcastle United by an astonishing 7-2 at St. James Park.
It looked as if George was going to settle into the team, but Davie Holt recovered his international form and the rugged left-back was released on 30 April 1967. George moved to Lincoln City in May 1967 and had an extensive career with the then Fourth Division club.
Proving to be a resolute and consistent full-back, George scored 19 goals (mainly penalties) in 250 games for the Imps, and the popular defender enjoyed a benefit match against Chelsea in December 1973.
George left Lincoln City in the summer of 1974 and joined the Northern Premier League side, Worksop Town, where he greatly enhanced the team and became club captain. He later played for Lincoln United and then Skegness Town, before retiring in the summer of 1980. George later returned home to live in Bonnyrigg.
