U18s Match Report: Hearts 0-3 Hibs

16th April 2021

Hearts fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Hibs in today’s CAS U18s League derby match.

Mackenzie Weir headed Hibs into the lead before Josh O’Connor and Connor Young added two more in the second half.

The visitors were first to threaten when Jayden Fairley’s free kick was met by Robbie Hamilton but his header was brilliantly turned around the post by Liam McFarlane.

From the resulting corner, the ball was cleared only as far as Fairley at the edge of the box but his low effort was comfortably held by McFarlane.

Hearts had their first chance 11 minutes in. Callum Hambrook clipped a ball into the box for Ryan Schiavone but his glancing header fell wide of the target.

The deadlock was broken on the half hour mark. Fairley’s free kick into the back door found Weir, who powered a header beyond McFarlane to give Hibs the lead.

Hambrook made Murray Johnstone work eight minutes later, drilling a 25-yard set piece on target but the keeper got across his line to make the save.

It was nearly 2-0 moments later. Fairley’s free-kicks were causing problems at the back and this time he found Jacob Blaney, whose looping header brushed past McFarlane’s right-hand post on its way out.

The woodwork came to Hearts’ rescue eight minutes into the restart. Young’s 20-yard free-kick beat McFarlane but came crashing back off the crossbar.

Hibs doubled their lead just before the hour mark. O’Connor cut inside from Hearts’ right flank before slamming a curling right-foot effort beyond McFarlane and into the far corner of the net.

The Wee Jambos rallied and created a series of chances. Hambrook hooked a ball into into Hibs’ six-yard box but, under pressure from the visiting defence, Aaron Darge could only head wide.

Hambrook did well again to get down the right and send over a cross for Finlay Pollock but his header couldn’t find the target.

Darge had another headed opportunity when Johnston missed Macaulay Tait’s corner but the captain’s header flew wide.

Johnston then produced a great save to deny Pollock, getting down to his right-hand post to turn the Hearts man’s snapshot wide.

In time added on, Young received the ball at the edge of the box with his back to goal before turning and smashing past McFarlane to make it 3-0.
