First Team

In it to win it

5th October 2020

Robbie Neilson will utilise his squad during the upcoming Betfred Cup campaign though he insists Hearts are in it to win it.

The Jambos start the 2020/21 season with a group stage tie against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Tuesday night, before facing Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

With a couple of minor injuries in the squad, the manager will use the full potential of his group over the next couple of weeks as he looks to take the men in maroon on another cup run.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference today, he said: “We’re going strong but there are a couple of boys who have got wee niggles where we think tomorrow night is a wee bit too soon for them but they should be ready for Saturday.

“Most of the boys are fit. There are a couple of wee niggles that we’re just managing at the moment. We want to qualify through the group stages but we’re still preparing the team for the first game against Dundee.

“There will be a few boys that don’t play tomorrow night that play on Saturday and vice versa following through into the Tuesday.

“The league is the main target for us this season but the other targets are to try and win the cups.

“We’re going into this season, and we don’t have the Challenge Cup to worry about it, so we’ve now got the League Cup and Scottish Cup and for me they’re both big cups and we want to go as far as we can, and potentially go and win it.”

The transfer window closes tonight and Robbie admitted that although he’d like to bring someone in, he’s relaxed about the situation and is happy with the squad at his disposal.

“There could possibly be movement today,” he said. “There is interest in a couple of the players. We’re going to put a number of the younger players out on loan but that can be done after the window.

“Things might happen but if they don’t then I’ll be quite happy with what I’ve got. I’d like to bring one more in, we’ll see how that goes in the next 12 hours.”
