Goalies will be "tight knit", says Zander

09 March 2022

The towering goalie brought a near decade-long association with St. Johnstone to an end this summer, departing Perth an all-time club great after helping the McDiarmid Park men to an unprecedented Scottish and League Cup win.

A new challenge now awaits in Gorgie, with Zander set to compete with Craig Gordon and Ross Stewart for the starting spot between the posts – with our new ‘keeper looking forward to reuniting with his old national team colleague, Craig Gordon.

“As goalkeeper, you’re always aware that only one can play,” he told the Official Hearts Website.

“We all know that, but the groups of ‘keepers are always tight knit. I’m definitely looking forward to getting in and training again with Craigy, who I know from Scotland camps, and with Cheesy as well, who I’ve come up against in the past.

“I’m looking forward to getting in the building and getting started and in with the boys. I’m really excited to be working with the outfielders as well; it’s a great squad Hearts have here and I’m looking forward to working with them.”

After a summer of speculation about where his next challenge would be, Zander revealed the prospect of joining Hearts intrigued him.

After coming up against the Jambos on multiple occasions in his time in Perth, the big shot-stopper knows what the club is all about.

“I’m delighted to be here. It’s been a long summer for myself on a personal level, but I’m just delighted to get this one done in the end,” he added.  “I’m really looking forward to getting in and getting started.

“You don’t need to describe Hearts to anybody, everyone knows how big a club it is, so to be part of it now is an incredible feeling. As I said, It’s an exciting time for me.”
