One of Scottish football's brightest young talents, John already has a wealth of Premiership experience and has been a regular at the Hearts of the maroon defence since joining in January 2016.
Having amassed over 70 competitive appearances for Dundee United, the highly rated central defender joined Hearts in the January transfer window of 2016.
He has gone on to become a first-team star with the Jambos, racking up over 100 appearances for the club despite two long-term injuries.
Raised in the Aberdeenshire village of Luthermuir, John spent his early years at Brechin City before joining the United Academy setup. His brother, Harry, is a fellow defender who currently plays for Stoke City.
Despite his young age, John quickly established himself in the Hearts first team and is now one of the club's most consistent performers. Strong, quick and composed, he is also very assured in possession and often proves to be a key attacking outlet who initiates Hearts' forays into the final third.
Following injury to club captain Christophe Berra at the start of the 18-19 season, John deputised as captain and had an impeccable record with the armband, winning 75% of his games as skipper.
John was first called up to the full Scotland squad in May 2018 and went on to make his debut in September of the same year against Belgium. After breaking into the international side, John celebrated by penning a new long-term contract at the club in January 2019, extending his deal until 2022.
