Aaron McEneff became Hearts’ fourth signing of the January transfer window when he completed a permanent move from Shamrock Rovers.
Recently called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time, the busy midfielder arrives in Gorgie with a glowing reputation.
Born and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland, Aaron took his first steps towards professional football with Northern Ireland Football League side Institute.
In 2013 he impressed on trial at Tottenham Hotspur and signed a two-year scholarship. He was a regular in Spurs’ Premier League 2 side before returning to Northern Ireland in 2015 to join hometown club Derry City.
His time at Derry City saw an increase in goals year on year, notching seven, 10 then 15 between seasons 2016-2018. Aaron signed off his stint at the Candystripes with a trophy, scoring the third in Derry City’s 3-1 win over Cobh Ramblers 3-1 to lift the League of Ireland Cup.
A move to Shamrock Rovers followed and, again, Aaron would get his hands on silverware. After a second-placed league finish, Rovers defeated Dundalk in the final of the FAI Cup, with Aaron scoring his side’s only goal during normal time.
Season 2020 saw them go one better and win the league title, finishing 11 points ahead of Bohemians with Aaron chipping in with seven goals.
Having represented Northern Ireland from U17s to U21s, he was given full international recognition in November 2020 when he was called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their Nations League game with Bulgaria.
Aaron now links up with the Jambos after signing a two-and-a-half-year deal at Tynecastle.
