Robbie Buchanan’s first-half strike was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Hearts U20s against Hibs in the first ‘Wee Derby’ of the season.
Buchanan’s thunderous strike proved the difference in what was a closely contested tie at Ainslie Park on Tuesday evening. The attacker’s run across the edge of the box enabled him to curl a powerful shot into the top left corner.
A crowd of just under 500 turned out on a blustery evening where chances were at a premium during the opening stages. Hearts went close on 13 minutes when Liam Smith teed up Buchanan inside the box but his effort cleared the crossbar by inches.
Morrison then saw a shot saved from just inside the box as Hearts gradually began to impose themselves. The only goal of the match duly arrived on 34 minutes and Buchanan’s strike was worthy of winning any match, flying into the top left corner past an outstretched Sean Brennan in the Hibs goal.
Hearts keeper Kelby Mason then pulled off a superb save on the stroke of half-time to deny Henri Anier, before Ali Smith smashed the rebound off the crossbar.
Hibs, featuring first team players Jordon Foster, Dan Carmichael and Anier started the second-half brightly but struggled to carve out openings against a resolute Hearts defence. The hosts were mainly restricted to long range efforts for much of the second half, with Carmichael going close in the final ten minutes.
The Wee Jambos remained composed throughout however and held on to claim a 1-0 victory over their city rivals.
