Hearts U20s ran out comprehensive 4-1 winners over Partick Thistle U20s this afternoon in the Development League.
The visitors took the lead through Aidan Fitzpartick, but Euan Henderson and Prince Buaben strikes sent the Jambos in at half time with the lead, before goals from Lewis Moore and Marcus Godinho sealed all three points.
The Wee Jambos started brightly but it was the visitors who had the game’s first chance. Neil McLaughlin tried his luck from the edge of the box but his shot was weak at straight at Jack Hamilton.
Thistle could’ve taken the lead ten minutes in when Fitzpatrick tore down the left to send over a teasing ball to the back door, but the unmarked Connor Higgins couldn’t connect despite sliding in.
Moore’s delightful back-heel allowed Rico Quitongo to send over a ball for Danny Amankwaa to knock back to Moore, who teed the Dane up outside the box, but he could only lift his effort over the bar.
The deadlock was broken after 18 minutes. Fitzpatrick stole possession before weaving his way through the Hearts backline and slamming low in Hamilton’s bottom left corner.
Jamie Brandon’s swerving effort went close to restoring parity in the 20th minute, but a minute later the equaliser did come. Henderson was played through and he made no mistake with a left-foot finish beyond Jamie Sneddon.
Hearts got their noses in front with seven minutes of the half remaining. Buaben’s cross into the box was missed by everyone, and Sneddon stood rooted on the spot as the ball bounced across the six-yard box and into the corner of the net.
Substitute Aidan Keena hit the side netting a minute into the restart before setting up Hearts’ third goal on 48 minutes. He won the ball on the left before sliding through Moore, who fired beyond Sneddon and into the back of the net.
A minute later Keena was denied by a good save from Sneddon, with the Partick ‘keeper pushing the Irish striker’s close-range effort around the post.
From the resultant corner came goal number four. Moore’s looping corner was met by Godinho, who rose highest to nod into Sneddon’s bottom right corner.
Shots on goal were then reduced to long range efforts, though Henderson forced a good save out of Sneddon before Keena netted the rebound but he was flagged for offside.
Partick went close to pulling one back with ten minutes to go when McLaughlin latched on to a long ball and lobbed Hamilton from the edge of the box, only to see the ball land on the roof of the net.
