U20s: Hearts 2-3 Hibs

27th March 2018

Hearts U20s suffer narrow defeat at home to Hibs U20s.

Hearts U20s were beaten 3-2 at home by Hibs U20s this afternoon.

Goals from Ross Callachan and Callumn Morrison weren’t enough to earn a share of the spoils, as Hibs continue to top the Development League thanks to Lewis Allan’s brace and Josh Campbell’s header.

The visitors created the first chance three minutes in. Hamilton came off his line to clear but was caught in no man’s land as the ball fell to the feet of Jamie Gullan, but he could only fire wide from outside of the box.

Three minutes later Hamilton pulled off a great reflex save to deny Gullan, after seeing the effort late, and Olly Shaw was flagged for offside after going for the follow up.

Hibs were enjoying the lion’s share of chances and Gullan was heavily involved. Nine minutes in, he got to the byline and cut back for Shaw but he was stretching to hit it and ended up skying over the bar.

The Wee Jambos created their first chance a minute later. Euan Henderson’s delightful backheel at the edge of the box sent Morrison through, however he could only fire over the bar from 15 yards.

Hamilton came to Hearts rescue not long after, beating away an effort from Allan after he was played through.

Hearts drew first blood on 19 minutes. Callachan took down a cross to the edge of the box before weaving past a green shirt to go one-on-one with Paddy Martin, and coolly sending him the wrong way.

Hibs then missed a brace of chances before getting back on level terms after 36 minutes. Callum Donaldson tore down the left, cut inside away from Rico Quitongo before cutting back Allan to tap home.

It was 2-1 to Hibs two minutes later. Prince Buaben’s clearance was blocked by Allan, who was then played clean through and he made no mistake, curling round Hamilton and into the back of the net.

The lead didn’t last long as Hearts restored parity on 41 minutes. Lewis Moore drove through the middle before teeing up Morrison just inside the box and, from an angle, the wide man slammed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

The visitors regained their lead eight minutes into the restart. Sean Mackie’s corner was met by Campbell, who powered home a header from close range.

Hearts then hit the woodwork twice in quick succession. Morrison rifled a 20-yard free-kick off the crossbar, before Aidan Keena’s 25-yard rocket shot was brilliantly touched onto the post by Martin.

That was to be the end of the last real goalmouth action, and Hibs held on for the victory.
