U20s edged out by Buddies

Gary Oliver header not enough as Wee Jambos narrowly beaten by St Mirren.

Hearts U20s narrowly lost out to St Mirren last night at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium.

Gary Oliver halved the deficit after the Wee Jambos fell behind to Thomas Reilly and Kieran Sandlier goals, but the Buddies held out to record a 2-1 win.

Kevin McHattie made his first appearance in a Hearts shirt in three months, following an injury sustained in the first-team against Rangers, while fellow top teamers Scott Gallacher, Brad McKay, Sam Nicholson and Soufian El Hassnaoui also featured.

The home side broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when Reilly was teed-up 25-yards out and smashed home a brilliant goal into the top corner.

The Buddies then doubled their lead in the 33rd minute as Sadlier was slipped into the box and he fired low past Gallacher, moments after the home side hit the woodwork.

Hearts fought back in the second-half, with Oliver nodding in from El Hassnaoui’s 65th minute cross.

Robbie Buchanan looked to have headed the young maroons back onto level terms but he was ruled offside, although replays suggest he was in-line with a Saints defender.

Despite the closeness of the encounter, the equaliser proved too elusive for the Wee Jambos but plenty of positives can be taken from Jack Ross’ lads’ performance.
