U13s lift CAS League Cup

5th September 2021

Hearts U13s were triumphant in the inaugural Club Academy Scotland League Cup after beating Rangers 2-1 in the final on Saturday.

Goals from Jayden Mathie and Liam Walker ensured that the wee Jambos lifted the trophy at Oriam.

After topping their qualifying group and seeing off Celtic in the semi-final, Hearts went into the game full of confidence, and started the final on the front foot pinning Rangers back. The first goal came after 13 minutes following a switch of play and an attack down the right hand side for Hutchison to cut back for Mathie to Score.

Hearts doubled their lead shortly after. Good build up down the left-hand side led to Walker finding space inside the Rangers box before being fouled for the award of a penalty. Walker stepped up to then send the penalty into the top right-hand corner of the goalkeepers net.

The second period of the game ebbed and flowed with the young Hearts team having a few chances to extend their lead further coming closest when Mathie struck a free kick off the frame of the goal. As the period ended the Hearts defence had to stand resolute to Rangers pressure with Reid in goals saving at feet well to keep the lead intact.

Rangers pushed for a way back into the game during the final period of the game. Despite some resolute defending from Hearts, Rangers did find a goal to get themselves back into contention with nine minutes remaining. Despite the setback the young Hearts team regrouped to see the game out with maturity and created chances to extend the lead.

The coaches were proud of the players not just for their performance today but their efforts throughout the tournament. We hope that the success in the tournament is one that the players can enjoy but also use in to further their development towards one day walking out at Tynecastle Park.
