Souttar makes Scotland debut

8th September 2018

John Souttar made his senior Scotland debut in last night's defeat to Belgium.

The Hearts skipper played 90 minutes in his first ever outing for Alex McLeish's side, in what was a difficult evening for the national side.

John was joined on the pitch by his Hearts teammate Steven Naismith, who came on at half time to replace Leigh Griffiths and win his 46th cap.

The Belgians, fresh from finishing third in the World Cup, put four past the Scots without reply.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring on 28 minutes before three second-half goals in 14 minutes put the game to bed.

Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard bagged a goal a minute after half-time, then Valencia loanee Michy Batshuayi added a brace.

Next up for Scotland is their opening Nations League match against Albania at Hampden on Monday.

Meanwhile, Michael Smith could feature for Northern Ireand this afternoon.

Michael O'Neill's side begin their Nations League campaign at home to Boznia-Herzegovenia with Smith looking to add to his one senior cap.
