Sibbick's special bond

28th January 2022

Toby Sibbick spoke of his special bond with the Hearts support, saying that “coming home” to Tynecastle was the only move he wanted.

The versatile Englishman sealed his Gorgie homecoming from Barnsley yesterday and revealed that no other offer – be they in Scotland or further afield – would have stopped him from pulling on the famous maroon once again.

“It feels good. The last few months have been tough for me as a player. I always knew that one day I’d like to come back to Hearts. I wanted to show people what I really am. I’ve grown as a player and a person over the past few years,” he told the media ahead of the Motherwell game.

“When the opportunity to come back came around, I wanted to get it done. Even after I left, I kept an eye out for Hearts. When they were on TV, I watched the games and checked their results.

“There were links to others! I always felt like I’d come back to Hearts. I don’t think I’d ever do that to this club, because the Hearts fans took to me so well; they always sent me positive messages. They were saying stuff like: ‘Please, don’t go! Come home!’. So, I came home and I’m excited to get started.”

Growth, both personally and professionally, is clear to see within Toby, two years on from his last stint for the JTs. Able to operate in a variety of positions, the big man hopes his versatility will be an asset to HMFC – as the race for third heats up.

“I remember I made my debut against Rangers in midfield with Andy {Irving}. These days, I’m more often on the right side of a back three. Everyone knows that I’m a versatile player though; I can play right wing-back, centre-mid, centre-back, wherever.

“Today, I spoke to the manager and said I’m happy to play wherever for the team.”
