Ryotaro Meshino’s Japan have been eliminated from the AFC U23 Championship after losing their second group game in a row.
The Hearts forward, who scored in the opening group game loss to Saudi Arabia, started against Syria on Saturday but couldn’t prevent the Samurai Blues from falling to a 2-1 defeat.
Two losses on the bounce leave Japan rooted to the bottom of Group B and unable to qualify for the next round, though they have one final chance to pick up points when they take on Qatar on Wednesday.
Ryotaro will fly back to Edinburgh following Japan’s final match in Thailand to prepare for Hearts’ William Hill Scottish Cup tie against Airdrieonians.
