Robbie Neilson has hailed Callum Paterson’s inclusion in the Scotland squad as a triumph for the Hearts Football Academy.
The defender has been called up to Gordon Strachan’s senior squad for the double-header against Ireland and England, and Robbie hopes the standard has been set for the young players playing their trade at Riccarton.
Speaking exclusively to Hearts News this afternoon, Robbie said: “It’s great for Callum. I’m delighted for him.
“It’s a great boost for him and a great boost for the other boys as well. There are a few boys with Scotland U21s and it shows you can make that step.
“It’s a great to sell to all of the young players coming through the Hearts Football Academy. We’ve shown that we can produce guys who can get into the full Scotland squad.
“I spoke to him last night and he was delighted. He was a bit surprised as he was meant to be going away with the U21s, so to go away with the full squad is great for him.
“I think Callum knows himself that he’s still got a long way to go, in terms of being a regular and getting a regular game. But he’s going in the right direction.
“He’s been working hard in training and he’s been doing well. He just needs to continue it now.”
