Queen of the South 1-0 Hearts

Jambos suffer friendly defeat at Palmerston Park.

Hearts suffered a 1-0 defeat to Queen of the South in Wednesday night’s friendly at Palmerston Park.

The only goal of the game came courtesy of a Michael Smith own goal as his attempted clearance of a cross from the right ended up in the back of his own net.

Craig Levein restored Christophe Berra, John Souttar and Peter Haring to the heart of defence and there were also starts for Uche Ikpeazu and Aidan Keena, whilst Kyle Lafferty and Steven Naismith were both rested.

Ryan Edwards registered the first shot on goal with a deflected effort from 20 yards out in what was an otherwise uneventful opening 15 minutes.

The Jambos then came close to taking the lead on 16 minutes. Michael Smith picked the ball up wide right, his ball into the box was met by Olly Lee who flicked a shot inches wide of the far post.

Five minutes later, Aidan Keena found himself in possession in the box but the keeper was equal to his snapshot from the right hand side. Oliver Bozanic then sent a looping shot onto the roof of the net as the Jambos continued to dominate proceedings.

The hosts, however, nearly took the lead on a breakaway when Stephen Dobbie was released into the box but he could only steer his effort wide of goal.

On the half hour mark, Lee curled a 25 yard inches over the bar.

A few minutes later, Queens got their noses in front as a ball in from the right came off Smith and rolled over the line.

The hosts started the second half brightly with Stephen Dobbie going close on two occasions inside the opening ten minutes.

Hearts then made a double substitution as Danny Amankwaa and Jake Mulraney replaced Ryan Edwards and Ben Garuccio.

Their introduction sparked a period of Hearts pressure with John Souttar denied an equaliser as a Queens defender hooked his effort off the line.

Lee then went agonisingly close to drawing Hearts level on 69 minutes as his long range effort sailed narrowly wide of the top right corner.

With just under 20 minutes to go, Craig Levein replaced Aidan Keena with fellow youngster Bobby Burns. Minutes later, a Lee corner from the left found Haring at the back post but the defender steered his header just wide of goal.

The Jambos carved out a few half chances towards the end of the tie, with Haring going close again with a header from a corner with a couple of minutes remaining.

That was the last of the action and Hearts now look forward to a friendly at Forfar Athletic this coming Saturday.
