New deal for Smith

24th March 2016

Hearts U20s' Ian Smith has signed a one-year contract extension.

Ian Smith has today become the latest Hearts youngster to commit his immediate future to the club after penning a contract extension.

The 17-year-old midfielder has signed a new one-year deal, which will keep him at Tynecastle until May 2017.

The youngster has featured regularly for Jon Daly’s U20 side this season, having been a mainstay in the U17s team last year.

Speaking to Hearts News on Thursday afternoon, Ian said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to have signed a new deal and I’m just looking to the year ahead now. Hopefully I can kick on and push myself closer to the first team.

“The club’s been great in terms of producing young players in recent years so hopefully I can add to that and be one of the ones who pushes on. It’s going to be a big year for me, no doubt about that.”

U20s Coach Jon Daly expressed his delight at securing Ian for another season. He told Hearts News:

"I'm delighted for him, he's been here a few years now and the next year or so will be huge for him. He's got a great chance to develop futher here, he'll be one of the older boys in the 20s team next season so it's an exciting time for him."
