Naismith strikes for Scotland

Steven Naismith continued his fine run of Scotland form with a goal in last night’s friendly defeat to Portugal.

The forward, who won his 49th cap, finished off an injury time move with a sweet strike to bag his 9th career goal for the national team, in a 3-1 loss to the European Champions at Hampden.

Naismith has scored two goals, forced an own goal and won a penalty in Alex McLeish’s side’s last three matches.

John Souttar missed out through injury, returning to Hearts ahead of the game.

Colin Doyle was an unused sub as Republic of Ireland got their first Nations League point on the board, drawing 0-0 with Denmark in Dublin on Saturday. Ireland host Wales on Tuesday night.

Michael Smith and Aaron Hughes were named amongst Northern Ireland’s substitutes on Friday night when they lost their Nations League encounter with Austria 1-0 in Vienna. They’re back in action this evening with an away tie against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Chris Hamilton started for Scotland U18s in Friday’s friendly defeat to France in Marbella. Anthony McDonald was on the bench as the French ran out 1-0 winners.
