Hearts began their 2021/22 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Peterhead.
The Jambos earned three points in the Premier Sports Cup Group A match at Balmoor Stadium
The match began at a decent tempo with the home side keen to stamp their authority, but without creating any chances.
Hearts settled into the game and fashioned the first chance of the match when Mackay-Steven beat the Peterhead keeper to a long ball, but was forced wide and his shot from a tight angle landed on the roof of the net.
Hearts were beginning to control the match now and created two more opportunities just prior to the half hour. First, John Souttar burst forward and dunked a ball through to Boyce, whose shot was blocked, before Peter Haring won the ball back and slipped Boyce in again but the keeper denied him.
The goal was coming, though, and it was via some individual brilliance from Mackay-Steven. Stephen Kingsley played a ball forward to the winger who won a header ahead of his marker, ran into it, burst past a second defender, drew the keeper out and slipped it into the corner.
Boyce was next to threaten just before the interval, when he cleverly made space for himself on the edge of the area, before shooting at goal but again Wilson was equal to it.
Hearts came out in the second half determined to finish the match and had two chances in quick succession when Aaron McEneff curled in a cross that Boyce glanced wide, before Michael Smith slipped a pass to the edge of the box for Haring who fired over the bar.
Boyce finally did get his goal shortly after, when Haring played a superb ball over the top to Smith whose first touch took the defender out of the play, and he squared for Boyce to tap in at the back post.
Hearts made a double change on the hour, introducing Finlay Pollock and Jamie Walker and the latter was involved immediately when he played in Alex Cochrane down the left wing. The full back squared for Mackay-Steven who fired wide into the side netting.
The game slowed down in tempo in the last twenty minutes with the result in no doubt, and Craig Halkett should have added a third but missed unmarked headers twice in quick succession in the final ten minutes as Hearts saw out time without any worries.
