Match Report: Hearts 0-0 Hibs

12th September 2021

Hearts and Hibs played out a goalless draw in today’s Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle Park.

It was a tale of two goalkeepers as Craig Gordon and Matt Macey both produced a series of fine saves to ensure that honours finished even.

Robbie Neilson made one change from the side that won at Tannadice before the international break, welcoming Stephen Kingsley back from injury in the place of Andy Halliday.

The visitors started brightly but it didn’t take the Jambos long to find their groove. Gary Mackay-Steven found Ben Woodburn at the edge of the box on 15 minutes, and the on-loan Liverpool forward scooped a shot inches over the bar.

At the other end, Joe Newell’s cross evaded everyone in the box and bounced back off the crossbar, before Liam Boyce looped a header onto the roof of the net.

Macey then produced the first of many impressive saves, beating away Mackay-Steven’s 25-yard piledriver. Craig Halkett would then rise to meet Woodburn’s corner, only to power a header over the bar.

Martin Boyle tried his own long-range effort just after the half hour mark but Gordon turned the ball around the post. Boyle then broke free on the stroke of half time to shoot from the edge of the box but again Gordon was equal to it, producing a fingertip save.

Hibs had their best chance of the game after an hour when Hearts gave away possession, allowing Kevin Nisbet to find Kyle Magennis inside the box but he shot straight at Gordon.

Moments later, Macey denied the Jambos a breakthrough with a brace of saves, firstly pushing away Mackay-Steven’s effort from inside the box before turning another GMS shot around the post.

Macey was called back into action in the 73rd minute, palming away substitute Josh Ginnelly’s header at his near post.

Alex Gogic’s 25-yard drive flew inches past Gordon’s right-hand post, then Scotland’s No.1 produced a stunning save to claw away Magennis’ close-range shot.

With a minute remaining, the match was nearly settled by an own goal. Alex Cochrane’s cross was sent back towards his own net by Paul Hanlon, but Macey was at full stretch to tip it over the bar.

There was still time for another couple of saves, with Gordon pouncing to stop Nisbet’s curling effort before smothering Magennis’ follow up.

The result maintains the Jambos’ unbeaten start to the cinch Premiership campaign, sitting joint second in the table.
