Ian Cathro has revealed his side knows the importance of getting the competitive season off to a good start, beginning with tomorrow night’s encounter against Elgin City.
The Jambos get season 2017/18 underway with the Betfred Cup group stage match at Borough Briggs and the head coach is happy with his players’ preparations, despite the relatively short summer break.
Speaking to the media this afternoon, he said: “I think we’re as ready as we could be. I say that because, of course, it’s a shorter period of time than normal to prepare for the first competitive game.
“We’ve all been pleased with the work we’ve managed to do in that time and we’re ready to play. We’re looking forward to it.
“We want to win the game tomorrow night. We know the importance of it.
“We’re very, very focused and we have been very, very focused on the first game. It’s as simple as that.”
Hearts have only met Elgin City twice in competitive fixtures, the second of which was a 4-0 League Cup win in 2010. The League Two side may prove to be an unknown entity, but the gaffer insists his staff have done their homework.
“We’ve seen them play, we’ve seen a couple of their games,” he said. “We’ve seen their game from the weekend as well, so we understand a bit about the team, a bit about the players.
“We’ll work a little bit more across the next day as well to make sure that we’re as prepared as we could be for the game.
“After that it’ll be about what we do on the pitch.”
