Hearts lifted the SPFL Reserve Cup this evening after defeating Motherwell 2-0 at Tynecastle Park.
Second half goals from Lewis Moore and Callumn Morrison sealed the victory for Andy Kirk’s side, who collected silverware in front of 1,728 supporters in Gorgie.
Hearts started brightly, with Morrison darting towards the Motherwell defence at every available opportunity. He tore down the right after five minutes and sent a ball to the back door for Ryan Edwards, but at full stretch he couldn’t divert the ball towards goal.
Edwards nearly turned provider 18 minutes in when he chased down a ball over the top to play in Morrison, but his angled drive was beaten away by Rohan Ferguson at his near post.
Motherwell registered their first shot on target just before the half hour mark with Jamie Semple skipping away from his man inside the box before blasting on target but Kelby Mason did well to make a block at his right-hand post.
Semple was at it again moments later, trying his luck from distance only to drag his effort just wide of the target.
Andrew Irving was pulling the strings in the middle of the park, showing neat footwork and clever passes and before the half was out sent a ball into the box for Alex Petkov to connect with but he couldn’t steer his header on target.
The Jambos upped the ante after the restart, with Morrison sending a tremendous ball from the right across the face of goal but it was just too far in front of the outstretched Edwards.
The deadlock was broken after 52 minutes. Rory Currie took possession at the edge of the box but was stopped in his tracks by two Motherwell defenders, only for the ball to bounce into the path of Moore in the six-yard box and he slotted beyond Ferguson and into the bottom corner of the net.
It was 2-0 eleven minutes later. Substitute Dario Zanatta showed great strength to hold off David Devine before outpacing him down the left to send the ball into the box for Morrison to finish from close range.
The action slowed down from thereon in, with Morrison blasting well over from distance, while at the other end Danny Johnson spun Chris Hamilton at the edge of the box to slam an effort on target but Mason did well to push the ball around the post.
Petkov had a chance to put the icing on the cake with eight minutes remaining when he got on the end of Irving’s free kick but his glancing header flew wide of the target.
Irving sent Morrison through on the right in time added on but the winger fired into the side netting, and that was all she wrote as Hearts lifted the SPFL Reserve Cup on home soil, despite being the away team!
