Hearts Reserves 5-1 Dundee United Reserves

3rd September 2018

Hearts Reserves ran out comprehensive 5-1 winners over Dundee United Reserves this afternoon.

Andy Kirk’s side put on a show to rack up their first win of the Reserve League season, racing into a 3-1 lead before the first-half was out and maintaining the pressure in the second period to knock another two past United at Oriam.

An action-packed first-half saw Hearts take the lead only eight minutes in. Aaron Hickey’s cross from the left was headed clear but only to the edge of the box and Rory Currie latched onto the loose ball to drill it beyond Josh Donaldson and into the net.

It was 2-0 a minute later. Arnaud Djoum’s pass into the box was touched on by Currie to Craig Wighton, who slammed past Donaldson.

The visitors were then awarded a penalty after Danny Baur fouled his man inside the box, but Paul McMullan skied his effort over the bar from the spot.

Wighton went close with a brace of chances before Connor Smith hit the underside of the crossbar from a set piece as Hearts went looking for a third.

Utd were handed another chance from the spot when Hickey swiped the legs of an attacking player but a Trialist saw his effort saved by Kevin Silva.

They did pull one back when Luc Bollan guided a header into the corner of the net from a free-kick.

With four minutes of the half remaining it was 3-1. Zata Matifadza tried to play his way out of defence but had his pocket picked by Djoum, who fed Wighton and he blasted past Donaldson to give the men in maroon a two-goal cushion.

United’s Sam Wardrop went close on two occasions after the restart before Donaldson denied Wighton a hat-trick.

The game was put to bed in the 71st minute. A delightful backheel from Wighton saw McDonald weaved his way into the box before firing high into the roof of the net.

Substitute Euan Henderson saw a late header pushed around the post before he put the ice on the cake in stoppage time. Bollan failed to deal with a long ball, instead knocking it into Henderson’s path and he rolled past Donaldson and into the corner of the net.
