Hearts Legends back in action to support Colts' Rwanda trip

16th March 2016

Fundraising Match to support coaching trip to Rwanda

A special fundraising match takes place this Sunday in support of a forthcoming trip to Rwanda.

The Hearts Legends team travels out to East Lothian to take on a Tranent Colts select at the Forester Park 3G pitch in Tranent.

This June, ten coaches from Tranent Colts are travelling out to Rwanda to share information on how they have developed their club to the point of receiving the SFA's much coveted Quality Mark ‘Legacy Award’.  The coaches will also be involved in some hands on house-building projects that brings together survivors of the genocide and former perpetrators, as the people of Rwanda continue to rebuild their communities.

East Lothian Council are also contributing to the trip with their Scottish FA Football Development Officer, Sean McAuley joining the travelling party to provide coach education for the leaders of youth academies in the country. To provide further support, Hearts’ Head of Community Alan ‘Chalky’ White will join Sean and the Tranent coaches in Rwanda to help deliver the coach education sessions.

Chalky commented, “As a club we are delighted to have been invited to contribute towards this trip and play a part in delivering  both football and community activity with coaches in Rwanda. It is heartening to see a local grassroots club such as Tranent Colts striving to support people not only outwith their local community but outwith their own country and we are very proud to be working with them as a community partner.”

Rwanda has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the last 20 years. Part of the rebuilding strategy has been to unite everybody through the nation's love of football.  Today, there are 12 youth football academies in the capital, Kigali, giving young people the opportunity to develop both football and life skills.

The Hearts Legends team is expected to feature former players including Henry Smith, Jose Quitongo, Mark Bradley, Alan Lawrence, Brian McNaughton, Jim Hamilton, Kris O’Neil as well as a couple of special guests from other teams.

The match kicks off at 4pm at the Forester Park 3G pitch, Lindores Drive, Tranent EH33 1HY

Entry is £3 adult / £1 Children & OAPs
