Hearts’ Community Football Department is once again teaming up with East Lothian Council Football Development to deliver three fully funded Summer Play the Game Courses this July and August.
As part of East Lothian Council’s ‘Get Into Summer’ programme, the club will be delivering three Play the Game Courses across Prestonpans, Musselburgh and Tranent – all of which will be free of charge to book. This is thanks to East Lothian Council securing over £300,000 worth of funding from both the Scottish Government and SportScotland. Their ‘Get Into Summer’ initiatives include such activities as rugby, swimming, tennis, computing, multi sports and a host of other exciting opportunities as well as our very own Play the Game Courses.
Over the past three years, the Community Football Department has run several successful courses in East Lothian providing affordable football for over 250 youngsters in that time. With the addition of the ‘Get into Summer’ programme funding for 300 youngsters to join us this Summer, we hope to provide for those who have been most adversely affected by the pandemic. These three courses are designed to give these youngsters the opportunity to be active, connect with others and enjoy the best that East Lothian, and Heart of Midlothian, has to offer.
These courses, supported by DPS Group and the Scottish FA, are open to players of all abilities aged between 5-12 years and the focus is firmly on developing football skills in a fun-filled environment. The sessions aim to offer a balance between coaching and allowing players to experience exciting game-based activities and challenges.
These three courses across Prestonpans, Musselburgh and Tranent add to Play the Game Courses already available for booking across Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Galashiels and, of course, right here at Tynecastle Park this Summer.
On the exciting partnership, C.J Sandison, Hearts’ Community Co-ordinator, said:
“To be able to offer free football to 300 youngsters in East Lothian, especially after the past 18 months everyone has had, is magnificent. We really cannot thank East Lothian Council enough for allowing us this opportunity to offer our Play the Game Courses for free. Having previously delivered our Play the Game programmes throughout East Lothian, we know the appetite for football that the region has is immense. We hope these three free courses will allow for us to put a smile on youngsters faces and help those families most in need.”
Speaking to East Lothian Council on the wider ‘Get into Summer’ programme, which you can find out about here, Cabinet member for Education and Children’s Services, Councillor Fiona Dugdale, said:
“Get into Summer is a really exciting opportunity to have fun and enjoy East Lothian. While the pandemic has undoubtedly had an impact on everyone in our area it has been particularly challenging for some of our children and young people. The activities on offer will help families recover, connect and, most importantly, have fun.”
Sean McAuley, East Lothian Football Development Officer, added:
“I am absolutely delighted we will be continuing our partnership with Heart of Midlothian this Summer. I am really looking forward to teaming up once again to provide this fantastic opportunity for all young people in East Lothian to get access to free football courses throughout this Summer.”
