Draw ends Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes

Aaron Hughes breaks caps record but Northern Ireland's World Cup dreams dashed after stalemate in Switzerland

Aaron Hughes and Kyle Lafferty’s World Cup dream ended last night when Northern Ireland failed to find a way past Switzerland.

The Play-Off second leg ended in a 0-0 draw in Basle, despite an impressive performance from Northern Ireland, as Switzerland’s first-leg goal was enough to take them through to the finals in Russia next year.

Centre half Hughes earned his 109th cap, making him the most capped outfield defender in home nations history, while Lafferty was an unused substitute.
