Don Cowie believes signing a new contract is a big personal boost heading into tomorrow’s Ladbrokes Premiership game against Rangers.
The midfielder yesterday committed to further year, which means he’ll extend his stay at Tynecastle to 2019.
He admits his period at the club hasn’t all been plain sailing, but insists he’s relished the challenges and has loved every minute of his time at Hearts.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, he said: “It’s a great feeling, a great feeling that the club feels the need to extend my contract.
“It’s been a tough time, the past six to nine months, but it’s a challenge that I feel I’ve enjoyed.
“I’ve enjoyed being at the club, I’m enjoying my time here and the fact that the club feel the need to do that is a great boost for me.
“Looking forward, I’m excited to help the club even more.
It’s been tough time but I’ve loved it, I’ve loved every minute of it.
“I’ve played a lot of football and that was the reason I came to the club, to try and play a lot of football.
“At my age you take it as it goes, try and play as much as you can, see what happens, but the fact the club felt that it wanted to reward me with a new contract and extend it is a real boost for me, a compliment that they feel at this stage of my career to do that and I can only thank them and say how grateful I am to Ann Budge and Craig Levein.”
Don’s Jambos visit Ibrox tomorrow looking to build on the three points gained at Kilmarnock last week.
He knows it will be a testing encounter but he points to how well the men in maroon performed against the Glasgow side last season as an indicator that they’re capable of picking up a result.
“They’re a good team,” he said. “I watched them against Motherwell. I thought in the first-half they were excellent, really exciting and creating lots of chances. It’ll be a difficult game.
“They’ll be looking to bounce back after a poor result at the weekend, but it’s a game that we’re looking forward to.
“We did well against them last year over the piece, we caused them a lot of problems and I see no reason why we can’t do that on Saturday.”
