Callum Paterson bemoaned slack defending as Hearts’ downfall in Wednesday night’s League Cup defeat to Celtic.
The Hoops booked their place in the semi-finals as goals from Leigh Griffiths and Tom Rogic secured victory, with Arnaud Djoum’s late header proving only consolation.
“We lost two slack goals tonight, which is disappointing after we got a good result at the weekend.
“In training, we were working on blocking crosses and stopping them getting down the wings, but we didn’t do it tonight and we were just slack down the two sides.”
“Celtic are a good team and we showed the respect we thought they deserved and tried to catch them on the break.
“They had a lot of the ball in the first half, which was our game plan, but they never caused us any trouble and it was working, but losing those two goals killed us.”
The full-back opted to remain positive, however, pointing out that the Jambos were still unbeaten in their last four league games heading in to Saturday’s clash with Partick Thistle.
“We’re still on a good run of form. We’re focusing on the league now, that’s the priority as it always has been, so we’ll move on to that.”
