Hearts Women narrowly lost out to Motherwell in a closely fought match in Wednesday night’s SWPL encounter at Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie.
It definitely felt like a game of two halves for the Jambos who were sluggish in the first half and dominated by their opponents.
Claire Adams opened the scoring for the hone side after 17 minutes when she met a cut back from a counter attack to fire high beyond Ailey Tebbett in the Jambos goal.
Six minutes later, a defensive mix-up involving Georgia Hunter allowed Lori Gardner to steal the ball inside the penalty area and square the ball for Nicole Pullar who had the simplest of tasks to roll the ball into the empty goal.
Motherwell continued to press their advantage and it was only the fine reflexes of former ‘Well keeper Tebbett that kept the scoreline down, making some fine stops including an acrobatic diving save to deny Adams from a free kick.
Head coach Andy Kirk shuffled his pack and introduced three subs in the first half to try and spark some life, and it seemed to do the trick early on in the second half when Katey Turner skinned her marker down the left and crossed for Kirstie McIntosh who finished well just three minutes into the half.
Despite grabbing the goal, and increasing their possession in the final third, both teams were limited to long range efforts and Hearts failed to trouble the keeper, with Motherwell content to keep the ball in the corner and see out time.
