Dave Mackay

13th March 2015

Club legend's funeral service to take place in Edinburgh on Tuesday, March 24.

Tomorrow will see the club pay its respects to the legendary Dave Mackay when there will be a minute’s silence held at Tynecastle before the Championship game against Dumbarton.

Members of Dave’s family from Scotland and England will be guests of the club in the Directors’ Box and they will join Dave’s former Hearts team-mates Freddie Glidden, Alex Young, Jimmy Murray and Gordon Marshall for this special tribute on what promises to be a very poignant and emotional occasion. We would ask all fans to try to be in their seats a few minutes earlier than usual.

Funeral Details

Dave’s family have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of tributes paid to him and also the depth of affection and respect that has come from across the country and the football world. Taking this into consideration and in order to alleviate the stress that any family can feel at this sad time, the club has taken on the main role in organising Dave’s funeral, which we will do alongside Isobel and the rest of the family.

The funeral will take place in Edinburgh on Tuesday 24th March.

It is fitting that for Dave’s last journey the funeral cortege will leave from his beloved Tynecastle Park at around 1.30pm. The remembrance service will take place at Mansfield Traquair, 15 Mansfield Place, Edinburgh, EH3 6BB, at circa 2.15pm.

Due to the expected large number of people wishing to pay their respects to our former league-winning captain, admission will be by invitation only – at the discretion of the family – but as the club is co-ordinating this on their behalf, we would ask all requests to be sent to us at the e-mail address below.

A private service for family and close friends will then take place at Warriston Crematorium, Warriston Road, EH7, at circa 3.15pm. Heart of Midlothian FC chaplain Andy Prime will conduct both services.

This will be followed by a reception for family, friends, former colleagues, team-mates and football dignitaries in the Gorgie Suite at Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh. Details of the exact timings and the route the cortege will take will be confirmed following discussions with the City of Edinburgh Council and Police Scotland.

Dave’s family has been deeply touched by the messages of support since his passing and would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes.

They have kindly requested that any enquiries now be directed to Heart of Midlothian FC.
